MSC Nordics

Team profile: Jarne Postma

By | Company update | No Comments

Jarne Postma joined MSC as an associate in June directly from the university. He has always been intrigued by the discovery of new solutions to problems that preferably improve society, which over time turned into a drive to support ventures in how to make innovations profitable. The life science industry ticks many of those boxes for him, and for most of us at MSC too. We’re happy to have him here!

Can you tell us about your background?

Hello Hello, my name is Jarne.

Life science to me has for a long time been a field that has much to offer, a field where there are still many solutions that have not yet been discovered. I knew that I wanted to be part of discovering these new solutions and innovations to, in some way or another, improve society.

To accomplish that, I took a bachelor’s in biotechnology. But during that time, I realized I was maybe not suited so well to work in a lab. I was fascinated by the research that was happening all around me in the university, but I wanted something more fast-paced, and something that was closer to reaching the public. I wanted to make sure that innovations would make the leap from the lab to the market, and land safely on the other side. Therefore, I chose to change the trajectory of my career by studying Entrepreneurship and Business Design, giving me hands-on experience in making innovations profitable. During my studies, however, I was not patient enough to wait until I graduated to apply my knowledge to the real world. Therefore, I joined a non-profit consultancy focused on life science start-ups where we helped ventures with everything from strategy to regulatory compliance. It was during this time that I understood that I really enjoyed being able to work on different projects. So, not much later I applied for a spot on the MSC team.

“To me, consulting is like watching a good Netflix series, something new and exciting happens every day.”

Why did you choose to join MSC?

I am proud of the Nordic life science industry with its large number of new innovations and new technologies that are being invented. I want to be part of as many of these innovations as possible and already I have been able to work on new innovations during my time at MSC.

I joined MSC because it gives me the unique opportunity to help small- to medium sized life science companies in a large range of projects. As I mentioned before, the leap from innovation to the market is very large, and many details need to be in order. I thrive with doing many different tasks and applying learnings from one to the other. MSC is a company that allows me to work on many different projects, learning new things along the way.

What do you look forward to most in joining MSC?

I am truly excited to learn from all the talented people at MSC to get more experience within the field. I look forward to all the challenging tasks that lie ahead and the long days to figure out solutions. To me, consulting is like watching a good Netflix series, something new and exciting happens every day.

What are you most proud of in your professional life thus far?

During 2021, I was part of a team that founded a high-tech start-up in cybersecurity. As I have a biotech background the cybersecurity field was unfamiliar to me, to say the least. But together with the team, we put in a lot of effort, time, and energy to put the venture on the tracks. I learned a lot, both within cybersecurity but also about how to create a successful venture in general. Looking back to where I started from, I am proud of where the venture was in June 2022 when I joined MSC, and I am curious to see what is yet to come.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Now that summer is here, I have been able to enjoy riding my bike more. Luckily, I live close enough to the MSC office to take my bike here and live far enough away to have time to enjoy the bike ride here in the mornings.

Swedish Digital Health 2022: Unique list of promising companies

By | Digital Health | No Comments

The digital health landscape is one of the most exciting and innovative areas in the healthcare space – and has been so for some time. It is, not only, a revolution engaging a broad audience but also a fast-paced and creative space. As digital health has created a special place in our life science hearts, we were curious to find out more about the Swedish landscape. Here we present the first look at a unique map of the digital health space in Sweden.

Let’s take a step back to look at the bigger picture of the digital landscape in Sweden; from revolutionary Spotify to the tremendously successful gaming industry. The least that can be said is that there seems to be quite an impressive talent pool residing here in Sweden.

Sweden + digital health seems to be the perfect sweet spot with the innovative spirit of entrepreneurs in Sweden combined with a high general interest in health and wellness. And it shows in spades; the Swedish digital health landscape is flourishing.

We at MSC Nordics live and breathe healthcare innovation. Our core focus is on life science and biotech companies in the Nordics, but the booming digital health space is something we cannot (and will not!) ignore. Although the What, How and Scientific link varies, they all share the common goal of transforming the lives and health of people for the better. A purpose close to our hearts.

What is digital health?

There is no universally accepted definition of digital health, but everyone agrees that it involves a combination of healthcare and technology. Some definitions narrow this down to connectivity and the Internet being the key element.

Who gets to be on the list?

There are many, many, exciting companies in the Swedish digital health space. Coming from an area of medical science, we aimed to make the selection process based on our skewed interest in the digital health companies that have a stronger scientific base. Other criteria in the process included:

  • A Swedish-founded and based company
  • Companies developing or offering digital health technologies or technologies that enable digital healthcare offerings
  • It is more geared toward the healthcare space than lifestyle and fitness.

It is free to be part of the map, and MSC Nordics do not receive any compensation for this.

Why is a map of the digital health landscape in Sweden needed?

The WHO has set a Global Strategy on Digital Health with the purpose to promote healthy lives and well-being for everyone, everywhere, at all ages by 2025. As we all have seen, digital innovation is happening at an unprecedented scale. But, even so, its application to improve the health of populations remains largely untapped, and there is immense scope for use of digital health solutions.

We hope that this map can help facilitate collaborations, partnerships, and knowledge-sharing as we all have a stake in this. If the map can come in handy for prospective investors too, that is certainly an added bonus.
